Once upon a time in Spain, there was a very experienced and professional accountant named Pablo. With 20 years in the business, Pablo had everything he needed: a successful career, happy clients, and a very comfortable life. His office was full of paper files, detailed spreadsheets, and shelves lined with heavy books on Spanish tax laws. Pablo loved his routines and believed there was no need to fix something that wasn’t broken.
Then came John, a freelancer from Slovakia who worked as a marketer and cryptocurrency investor. John was modern and tech-savvy. He ran his entire business online and couldn’t remember the last time he visited an office. For him, managing finances was simple. Just use digital tools like cloud storage and automated platforms.
Traditional Meets Digital
When John searched online for an accountant in Spain, most of the options he found had names like “Gestoría ABC” or “Asesoría Manolo.” None of them sounded modern, but eventually, he chose Pablo because of his great reputation.
Their first conversation set the tone. Pablo welcomed John and said, “Please bring all your documents to my office, so we can start.”
“Bring them? Can’t I just upload everything to a cloud?” John asked.
“A cloud?” Pablo replied, looking out the window. “The weather looks fine today.”
It was clear from the start that they lived in completely different worlds.
Paper vs. Apps
Pablo insisted on printing everything—bank statements, invoices, tax reports. He even asked for an in-person meeting every quarter to go over the numbers. John, on the other hand, managed all his invoices, payments, and crypto trades with just a few clicks using an ERP system.
When John suggested they try working with his ERP to speed things up, Pablo wasn’t impressed. “Why complicate things? I use Excel for everything, and it works just fine,” Pablo said confidently.
John tried to explain his cryptocurrency investments, but Pablo was visibly confused. “Cryptocurrency? Are those stocks? Bonds? What kind of money is that?”
By now, John was beginning to lose hope.
When Two Worlds Can’t Meet
The final straw was when Pablo insisted they meet in person every quarter to review everything. John laughed. “But I’m rarely in the same country for more than a month. Can we just have a Zoom call?”
“Zoom? Is that like Skype? I’d need my nephew to help me set it up,” replied Pablo with complete seriousness.
John finally realized that no amount of explaining could bridge the gap between them.
The Lesson
In the end, John chose to work with an accounting service that better suited his modern, digital lifestyle. One where tools like ERPs and online meetings are the norm. For Pablo, however, his traditional way of working continues to be enough for clients who prefer the comfort of in-person meetings and paperwork.
It just goes to show that while there’s no right or wrong approach, it’s important to find a service that truly understands and fits with the way you work. Whether you're all about paper or prefer everything online, it’s about finding the right match for your needs.
