If you’ve ever heard that there are no financial aids for freelancers in Spain, let’s set the record straight: that’s simply not true. Yes, Spain has high taxes for the self-employed, but it also offers grants and subsidies to support entrepreneurs. One of the least-known yet most valuable aids is the Balearic Islands' grant of up to €3,000, aimed at consolidating and growing long-term freelance businesses.
Who Can Apply? (Not Just Mallorcans!)
One common misconception is that this grant is exclusively for locals. That’s false. If you are a freelancer residing in any municipality of the Balearic Islands, whether in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, or Formentera, and you meet the criteria, you can apply. Many expats wrongly assume they won’t qualify, but as long as you meet the residency and business requirements, you are eligible.
What Are the Requirements?
Be registered as a freelancer (autónomo) for at least 36 months in Spain.
Be a legal resident in the Balearic Islands.
Be up to date with tax and social security payments.
If you run a seasonal business, you must prove at least four months of activity per year.
Women who have temporarily ceased activity due to maternity leave won’t be penalized for this in their eligibility.
What’s the Grant For?
Unlike some grants that require specific investments, this one is flexible, covering four main areas:
Innovation & digitalization
Strategic and financial management
Sustainability and social responsibility
Investments to improve competitiveness
Why Many Don’t Apply – And Why You Should
Many self-employed professionals don’t even attempt to apply for grants because they assume it’s too complicated or that they won’t be selected. The truth is, Spain’s bureaucracy can be intimidating, but that’s exactly why working with an English-speaking accountant in Spain can make a difference. Our team of tax advisors across Spain specializes in handling these applications for expats, ensuring you don’t miss out on financial support.
When & How to Apply
Applications open from January 1 to March 31, 2025.
The process is handled online via the official Balearic government website.
If you’re an expat running a business in the Balearic Islands and unsure how to apply, we can help. Don’t miss out on a grant that could provide a much-needed financial boost to your business!
