Think There Are No Grants for Self-Employed in Spain? Think Again
One of the biggest complaints from freelancers in Spain is that the taxes are high and that there are no grants to support new entrepreneurs. While it's true that Spain has some of the highest social security contributions in Europe, it's a myth that there are no financial aids for freelancers.
In fact, few people know that in the Comunidad Valenciana, new self-employed professionals can receive up to €5,000 in grants to kickstart their businesses. And even fewer people apply for it because they assume they won’t qualify.
The "EAUTOE 2024" Grant – Who Can Apply?
This grant is part of the Labora program and is designed to encourage self-employment. Many mistakenly believe it's only available for Spanish citizens, but that’s far from the truth. Expats legally residing in Spain and registering as self-employed (autónomos) can apply as well.
To be eligible, applicants must:
Be officially unemployed before registering as autónomo.
Stay self-employed for at least 12 months.
Submit a business plan that demonstrates viability.
How Much Can You Get?
The grant amount depends on personal circumstances:
€2,500 for general applicants.
€3,000 for women, individuals with disabilities, or people over 45.
€5,000 for women victims of gender-based violence.
Why Do So Few People Apply?
Most freelancers assume that getting a government grant in Spain is impossible due to bureaucracy. Others don’t know that this financial aid exists. Some believe that, as expats, they wouldn’t be eligible.
Yes, paperwork in Spain can be overwhelming, but with the right English-speaking accountant in Spain, you can navigate the process smoothly and access financial support that could make a big difference for your business.
